The 27th Annual Southern California Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2012 (with some interviews taking place on Friday, February 10th).

The schedule is as follows:
Friday, February 10th (UCLA Interviews [out-of-town interviewers] only)

Saturday, February 11th (Interviews, Table Talk, Lunchtime Discussions and Criminal Law Panel) 9:00am – 5:00 p.m. [Note that table-talk ends at 3:00 p.m.]

While held at UCLA School of Law, the Career Day is cosponsored by the Southern California-area law schools, including California Western, Chapman, Loyola, Pepperdine, Southwestern, Thomas Jefferson, University of San Diego, University of Southern California, and Whittier. The annual Career Day is designed to expose law students to the practice of law in the public interest and to encourage students to consider a public interest career path. More than 100 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private firms participate in Career Day activities.

Public Interest Career Day is comprised of a number of different activities:

Prescheduled, formal interviews for summer and/or postgraduate positions.
Panel and informal discussions.
Informal "table-talk," with representatives of many participating organizations, agencies and firms.

For those of you planning to participate in Public Interest Career Day ("PICD"), we encourage you to attend the orientation where we will discuss important dates and instructions.

The Office of Public Interest Programs and the Office of Career Services will present an orientation to the February 11 Southern California Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PICD) and its various components, including most especially the interviewing component for 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls. More than 100 entities have already registered to participate, the overwhelming majority of which offer 1L and 2L summer opportunities. The Orientation will include an overview of all important dates and instructions for participating in the Day.

The deadline for PICD bidding, ranking, and resume and cover letter uploading is Tuesday, January 24, at 5:00 p.m. The online system is currently open, and instructions for viewing/researching participating entities, bidding, ranking, and resume and cover letter uploading were e-mailed to you over break by Cathy Mayorkas. Participate in Legal Writing Competitions!

Law school is a time to distinguish yourself, and writing competitions are one way to do that. You can sharpen your research and writing skills on a topic of law you care about, and you can potentially show an employer that you have an interest in a relevant area of law. In addition, should you happen to win, your paper could be published in the journal of the organization that sponsored the competition, and you might be invited to an event and have a unique networking opportunity. And yes, there can be cash awards, sometimes running into thousands of dollars.

There are dozens and dozens of annual writing competitions sponsored by just as many organizations and covering a variety of practice areas. The Financial Aid website is a good place to start. When our office receives information about competitions, we post them on our Symplicity job board, but there are many more than we ever see. A simple Google search yields good results. You also can visit bar association websites, such as the American Bar Association, to find other competitions.

Government Reception Etiquette Tips

• What to wear: Business casual at the Government Reception is standard. Some students choose to wear something a little more casual while others dress in suits – all are welcome. You do want to make a good impression so attire should be neat and not distracting.

• Prepare your list of targets: Know who is attending and have an idea of which participants you’d like to meet. But have an open mind. You may have several agencies on your target “A” list, but also have some “B” list targets- take advantage of the opportunity to chat with others who aren’t busy.

• Resumes: 1Ls should not bring resumes since the official recruiting season doesn’t start until December 1st.

Not everyone attends the fair because they have immediate hiring needs, but 2Ls and 3Ls might want to bring copies of their resumes with them. You could have more than one version, depending on your targets. Keep them in a simple portfolio or folder.

• When you arrive: Government representative will be at tables around the room with a sign noting their agency. Take a few minutes to walk around and find your targeted agencies.

• When you reach the government representative: Make eye contact, introduce yourself with a smile and a handshake. Be enthusiastic and let the government representative know about any area(s) of interest you have in common with what their agency does.

• Be ready for common questions: Common questions you might face are something along the lines of "what are you here for today?" “Tell me about yourself” “Why are you interested in us” “What is your background and experience?”

• Prepare questions ahead of time: Remember the questions you have about them (prepare a list ahead of time if possible), but also be very respectful of their time since they may only have time for a few minutes with you.

• Use your wait time wisely: If you’re waiting to talk to an agency, strike up a conversation with any students waiting with you. Receptions are all about networking. Of course, you are building a network with the agencies, but you can also network with your classmates and share information. Ask them what they are looking for and whether they've had success. This type of networking may lead you to a table where an employer is eagerly seeking your skills.

• At the end of the meeting: Shake their hand and thank them for their time. If they have a business card, take one. Record notes in between each contact – preferably on the business card or agency literature.

• Follow-up: The follow-up is something all too many reception participants overlook. If you have their contact information, use it to send a follow-up email within 24 hours, thanking them for their time. Remember, you should have notes about your conversation on their business cards, which will help you tailor your emails.

Job Fairs and Bar Association events are examples of structured networking events.

Networking Prep - get the most out of your networking experience!

Research and know the prospective contact and/or job fair attendees.
Prepare a quick marketing pitch highlighting your strengths and promoting your candidacy.
Bring your materials- including extra copies of your resume, writing sample, transcripts and list of references.
Consider student business cards to maximize your networking– contact OCS for more information.
Arrive early to get a sense of the room or program layout.
If a job fair has a lunch workshop or seminar – attend to maximize networking opportunities!
Never stop networking!

2L Beyond OCI Series #6: Thinking About Judicial Externships for Your 2L Summer?

A summer judicial externship is an excellent career-enhancing opportunity to work for a federal or state judge during your 2L summer. OCS will be holding a program on the Judicial Externship application on November 7th; but if you know you'd like to extern, you may want to apply earlier than that (common timing for 2Ls is late Oct/early Nov - see below).

• What are some of the benefits to being a judicial extern?

Typically, judicial externs have an opportunity to refine their legal analysis and writing skills, gain exposure to adversarial practice, and witness the judicial decision-making process from a valuable perspective.
Working closely with judges, externs often develop important, lasting relationships while maximizing their marketability for future employment.
In addition, a judicial externship can be an important component in securing a post-graduate judicial clerkship.

• What are the downsides of a summer externship?

With the exception of a limited ABA Judicial Intern opportunity, judicial externs are not paid and are not eligible for funding.
Since judges expect students to accept an offer when it’s given, students should only interview with a judge if they’re prepared to accept an offer.

• When and how should I apply?

Generally 2Ls can apply before the December 1st date that restricts 1L applications. You first want to check the court’s website for any instructions. Assuming none are given, we anticipate that most judges are currently busy with clerkship applications so the best timing for 2L summer externship applications is probably around late October/ November. Note that there will be exceptions as we know of at least one judge (Judge Gee) who is reviewing 2L externship applications now.
OCS has a guide on how to apply for a summer judicial externship, which is located on our Judicial Externship webpage. 2Ls typically need to submit a cover letter, resume, list of references, writing sample and transcript. More information on locating judges and submitting applications is on our website.

• What if I’m interested in a semester judicial externship?

UCLA has an extensive, well-established and diversified student externship program, which is handled by the Externship Office. Students should visit their website for more information.

ENTERTAINMENT LAW INITIATIVE WRITING COMPETITION

The GRAMMY Foundation, in concert with some of the nation’s most prominent entertainment attorneys, established the Entertainment Law Initiative to promote discussion and debate about the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. Now in its 14th year, the program has grown to include a national writing competition, recently added writing competition workshops, a GRAMMY Week scholarship luncheon, and significant panel presentations focusing on relevant and challenging issues with some of the country’s most prominent entertainment, Intellectual Property and copyright attorneys. What is an in-house attorney?

In-house lawyers, also known as corporate counsel, work for a single company, entity or group of entities, providing advice on legal matters related to business activities. Opportunities to work in-house in most cases arise after at least three or four years of practice. Many experienced attorneys consider these possibilities at some point during their careers.

Should I work in-house for my 2L summer?

This question really depends on the individual student and therefore a conversation with your Section Advisor may be helpful. If your goal is to work at a law firm after graduation, you’ll want to talk through some of the pros and cons of choosing this as your 2L summer job. Employers tend to look carefully at your choice of 2L summer employment, and often law firms do like to see law firm experience on a resume. That said, there are some advantages to these positions. One is that they often have really good transactional work in an economy where that can be difficult to find. Another is that working in-house enables you to understand the client perspective, an asset you can discuss when interviewing with other legal employers. And some in-house opportunities do arise even in fall semester (although most are in spring.)

2L Beyond OCI Series #4: EXPLORING MID/SMALL SIZE LAW FIRMS

In addition to non-profit opportunities (click here if you missed the email), many 2Ls decide to work at small to mid-size law firms (generally firms with less than 75 attorneys) during their summer.

Why Mid/Small Size Law Firms?

The changing economic landscape has allowed midsize and smaller firms to gain a better footing in the legal market and become a more prevalent private sector opportunity for 2Ls. In fact, one in every four law school graduates begins his/her career in a small or mid-size law firm.

When Are They Hiring?

For the majority of small to mid-sized private law firms, the general hiring process does not begin until the spring semester, when these firms are in a position to define their respective hiring needs. That being said, the preparation for the mid/small size job search begins in fall.

Where Do I Begin?

- Step 1. Seize Current Opportunities.

Continue to check and apply for active job postings. Click here for a more comprehensive list of job sites.
Participate in Resume Books. In our ongoing efforts to reach out to employers and uncover opportunities on behalf of UCLA Law students, OCS will be sending out resume books to various mid/small sized law firms throughout the year. Keep your eyes open for these opportunities.
Take advantage of every opportunity to meet mid/small sized law firm practitioners by joining Bar Associations, attending OCS programs and conducting informational meetings.

- Step 2. Look to the Past for Prospective Opportunities.

OCS has compiled its 2L Non-OCIP list, which shows where 2Ls from the Classes of 2005-2010 have found second-year summer positions outside of the OCIP process. (Please note: the last column indicates when the student received an offer). These lists can help you identify prospective opportunities.
OCS has compiled a list of Non-OCI Firms that have Occasionally Hired in the Fall (see Private Sector page on the OCS website). Make sure to check the firm’s website regarding summer program availability before applying.

- Step 3. Build Your Own Path.

Working Part-Time During Your Fall or Spring Semester. Working part-time can help you get your foot in the door with a prospective employer. Check Symplicity for current job postings. Additionally, OCS has compiled a list of academic year part-time law clerk positions (2006-10). Part time for-credit externship opportunities are a possibility. The 2012 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program

The PMF Program was established by Executive Order in 1977 to attract to the Federal service outstanding men and women from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who have a clear interest in, and commitment to, excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. By drawing graduate students, including law school graduates, from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, the PMF Program provides a continuing source of trained men and women to meet the future challenges of public service.

The application for the PMF Class of 2012 is open September 15, 2011 through September 25, 2011.

Students must also be nominated by their school to be considered for the PMF Program. The nomination deadline is September 30, 2011. After you've completed your application, take the completed nomination form, a copy of your resume, a short (1 page maximum) essay on your interest in PMF, and a copy of your USAJOBS application to the school’s nomination coordinator, Dean of Students, Liz Cheadle.

There is no specific hiring season for non-profit organizations although for the majority of public interest organizations, the general hiring process for summer positions does not begin until the latter part of fall semester or the early part of spring semester at Public Interest Career Day.

We have debunked OCIP myths, NOW WHAT? Let’s focus on exploring concrete opportunities for your 2L summer outside of the OCIP process beginning with government agencies.

Why Government?

Working for the government during your 2L summer is an excellent way to acquire meaningful substantive experience, refine your legal skills and remain marketable for post-graduate jobs both inside and outside of the public sector. More importantly, “just about every legal office in the federal government” and most state and local government agencies host summer interns!

When Are They Hiring?

Timelines vary dramatically with some federal government agencies hiring early in fall. Since there is no formalized hiring season for government agencies, you need to identify what agencies you are interested in and then determine their individual hiring timeline. OCS will be holding its annual Government Reception on November 9, which is a great way to meet government attorneys. But some 2L deadlines will have passed by that time, so research opportunities early.

2L Beyond OCI Series #1: DEBUNKING OCIP MYTHS

Even with OCIP behind us, it is still the season where OCIP stories are everywhere. It is critical to avoid jeopardizing your own job search by believing these myths and misconceptions about OCIP. To help you discern reality from the rumble, we set straight the Top 5 OCIP myths around town.

Myth: Most students get their jobs through OCIP.

Reality: This is simply NOT true. In fact, the opposite is true. Nationwide, only 23.4% of graduates reported finding a job through on-campus interviewing, click here for the 2009 National Summary Report. That means, over 75% of law students nationwide find their jobs through other means.

Myth: Most legal employers participate in OCIP.

Reality: While OCS invites all types of employers to interview, generally only large firms can anticipate their hiring needs over 18 months in advance and have the resources to hire in this timeframe. Logically, most other legal employers hire as their needs arise and opt against participating in OCIP.

Myth: The bulk of legal employers are large firms.

Reality: Not true! Large firms (100+ attorneys) comprise only 10% of the legal employment market. Click here for the ABA demographics report. Rather, mid-size to small law firms, government agencies and public interest organizations are the bulk of legal employers.

Myth: If I start somewhere other than a big firm, I won’t be successful.

Reality: There are many successful attorneys that did not get their job through OCIP and these attorneys are engaging in sophisticated and intellectually rigorous work.

Reality: While it would be ideal to land your dream job right away, for many reasons most attorneys transition jobs after a few years. Video Conferencing Capabilities Available!

We currently have a membership with Law School Connect (LSC), a nationwide remote interviewing network providing videoconferencing services to law schools for legal recruiting through law firm sponsorships. LSC’s membership includes law schools, law firms, legal non-profits, public service agencies and courts.

For interviews with non-local employers, you may now be able to use videoconferencing. While there are times when an in-person interview is preferable, videoconferencing may provide a potential employer with an additional option. This is particularly relevant in the case of judicial clerkship interviews because judges have free access to the network.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”), Office of General Counsel, Legal Honors Program is HUD’s only recruitment program for entry-level attorneys. Subject to appropriations, approximately 10-20 Legal Honors positions are available annually in Headquarters, Regional offices and Field offices. Legal Honors begin work in August or September and participate in a 14 month appointment that may lead to a permanent position, pending bar admittance. 3L TIPS: IF YOU DIDN'T RECEIVE AN OFFER

Each fall some law students return to law school from their summer jobs at large firms without offers of permanent employment. Given the current economic market, this situation is not uncommon.

To many, it’s a huge, unforeseen blow. If it’s happened to you, you may be cycling through feelings of anger, betrayal and/ or self-doubt. You’ve worked hard only to have the rug pulled out from under you. Give yourself a bit of time to recover. Remember to use your support systems and seek out help if needed. Take care of yourself and remember you’re the same person you were at the beginning of the summer. This experience doesn’t define you.

While there are things taking place in the world right now that are outside of your control, the good news is there are things you can do.

In your 3L Cyber Binder under “Interviews” there’s an excellent article, reprinted with Berkeley Law’s permission, that covers strategies if you find yourself in this predicament. You can take steps to help yourself and improve your position for future employment.

We encourage you to read the article and work with your Section Advisor on a strategy about how to proceed. You may have some fact finding to do from your summer firm. Remember, that you’re not alone.

POST-OCI ETIQUETTE TIPS

Consider any contact with a prospective employer an interview situation.

Talk to the recruiter, receptionist, secretary or assistant as you would your possible boss.

Return any calls as promptly as possible. Failure to do so can potentially be harmful to your application.

But prospective employers will understand if you aren’t able to pick up or call right that second. They might consider it poor judgment if you take a call during an inappropriate time. If possible, make your call from a quiet place, preferably on a landline (click here.)

Prospective employers will not understand if it takes days rather than hours to return their call.

Have paper, pen and any other necessary materials on hand.

If you bid for interviews but subsequently decide that you do not want to interview (i.e., receive an offer from your summer employer, etc.), please cancel your interviews as soon as possible and adhere to the Cancellation/No Show Policy.

Tuesday, September 6th the Second Session Interview Program begins!

Be prepared for your interviews! Although most employers feel our students are well-prepared for their interviews, we have received some comments from employers in the past that some students are not familiar with the practice areas of the employer or the size of the office with which they are interviewing. Remember to do your research! Even if the employer is a last minute addition for you, please at least be familiar with basic information about the employer, including practice areas and size.

OCI Emergency Kit. If you run your stocking, lose a button, need a safety pin, forget your tie, etc. Don’t fret! OCS will have emergency “essentials” on hand to help. Of course, you will need to replace the item you use so that others will not have to panic!

NALP: Timing of Offers & Decisions Reminder! NALP's Standards for the Timing of Offers and Decisions (as outlined in Part V of NALP's Principles and Standards) are provided on NALP’s website at www.nalp.org.

Students are responsible for reading the full version of NALP’s guidelines, which is necessary for a complete comprehension.

OCS Summary of Guidelines

2L/3L student previously employed by the employer:
The offer may expire Nov 1. Reaffirm these offers within 30 days from the date of the offer letter.
2L/3L student not previously employed by the employer and offer is made on Dec 15 or before:
The offer may expire 28 days from offer letter or on Dec 30, whichever is first.
2L/3L student not previously employed by the employer and offer is made after Dec 15:
The offer should remain open for at least two weeks after the date of the offer letter.
2L/3L students generally:
Should not hold open more than five offers of employment at any one time.

Exceptions An employer having a total of 40 attorneys or fewer in all offices is exempt from the above guidelines. Offers from such employers made on or before Dec 15 should remain open for at least 3 weeks from offer letter or on Dec 30, whichever is first, and offers made after Dec 15 should remain open for at least 2 weeks

2L/3L student may request that one employer extend the deadline to accept the employer’s offer if the student is actively pursuing positions with public interest or government organizations until as late as April 1, but limited to one open offer. (See your Section Advisor to discuss strategies.)
